The studio

Serious study.
Personal attention.

Danforth Violin Studio is a private teaching studio for musicians pursuing further musical study and professional development.

Enrolment is selective, allowing close attention to each student’s preparation, progress, and long-term goals. Lessons and mentorship are provided personally by Daniel Yoo, drawing on approximately 30 years of teaching experience across beginner, advanced, and professional levels.

Students have gone on to become touring concert artists and working professional musicians. That breadth of experience informs an approach built around technical command, musical understanding, and increasing independence.

The work behind the music

A complete approach
to playing well.

Technique & sound

Technical refinement and sound production: developing the control, clarity, and tonal range needed to express a musical idea.

Rhythm & interpretation

Careful work on rhythm, phrasing, and interpretation, helping students make thoughtful musical decisions of their own.

Preparation & performance

Individual repertoire choices and structured practice plans for advanced examinations, auditions, and performances, including solo, chamber, and orchestral repertoire.

Beyond the lesson

Mentorship that
grows with you.

Long-term mentorship is central to the studio. Some teaching relationships extend over a decade.

That continuity supports students as they mature and their musical responsibilities become more demanding. Extended coaching and intensive workshops allow time for detailed work beyond the regular lesson, with an emphasis on disciplined preparation and thoughtful interpretation.

Young Artist Mentorship Programme

Selected eligible students may receive additional workshops, extended coaching, and artistic mentorship at no charge alongside their regular lessons. Participation is limited and based on musical potential, consistent preparation, and a serious commitment to learning.

A family’s perspective

Vincent Xia

Vincent Xia’s mother · 2017–present

Vincent began piano at six, later earning first-class honours in the Royal Conservatory Level 10 practical examination and first-class honours with distinction in Level 8 theory. At the time of this family profile, he was preparing for his January 2021 ARCT examination. He especially loved playing Bach for the mathematical precision of the music and the freedom it still gives a performer to be deeply musical.

Alongside piano and composition, Vincent studied violin through Suzuki Volume 8 and developed a deep love for the viola after receiving one as his Grade 6 school instrument. He began composing at seven, writing for piano and later for piano and violin.

At Claude Watson School of the Arts, Vincent became first violist of the chamber strings and performed a viola solo at school. He later entered Earl Haig’s Claude Watson Arts Program as a viola major and principal violist. He has also composed works for piano and violin, arranged The 12 Days of Christmas for performance, and describes music as a source of energy, creativity, and resilience.

Vincent began studying with Daniel Yoo in 2018 after his previous teacher became ill. His family particularly valued Daniel’s focus on building and solidifying technique. In December 2019, Vincent performed viola in a studio concert of Mozart concertos—an experience he described as one of the best performances of his life. He looked forward to future concerts, including sharing his own Bach arrangement for string orchestra.

“Daniel focuses on building and solidifying technique, which Vincent feels is the area he needs the most work on.”

An extended student reflection

Ivy Tan

Student · 2014

“Through the years, Daniel has taught me how to become an independent learner—how to practise on my own, understand pieces through analysis, and come up with solutions to my problems.”

“I started loving to play, inspired by the passion and personality that Daniel has shown me.”
